Pregnancy Beauty Care: What’s Safe and What Should You Avoid?

Pregnancy Beauty Care: What’s Safe and What Should You Avoid?

Pregnancy brings many beautiful changes, but it can also leave you wondering about your usual beauty and self-care routine.

Can I get a facial? Is hair coloring safe? Can I have a massage? What about threading or a manicure?

The good news is that pregnancy does not mean you have to stop taking care of yourself. However, it is important to choose pregnancy-friendly treatments and check the products being used.

Here are some common pregnancy beauty-care questions explained simply.

Threading and Hair Removal

Threading, waxing, and shaving are generally considered safe during pregnancy. However, pregnancy can make your skin more sensitive than usual, so you may notice more irritation or discomfort.

Choose a clean and hygienic salon, and stop if you experience significant irritation.

Facials

A gentle facial can be part of your self-care routine, but the products matter.

Before getting a facial, check the ingredients and avoid products containing ingredients that are not recommended during pregnancy. If you have acne, pigmentation, or another skin concern, speak with your dermatologist or obstetrician before trying new treatments.

Hair Coloring

You don’t necessarily have to give up hair coloring during pregnancy. Current guidance from ACOG and the NHS says that most research suggests hair dye is unlikely to harm the baby because only a small amount is absorbed through the scalp.

If you choose to color your hair:

  • Consider waiting until after the first 12 weeks if that makes you more comfortable.
  • Do a patch or strand test.
  • Use the product only for the recommended time.
  • Make sure the area is well ventilated.
  • Tell your stylist that you are pregnant.

And remember, “organic” or “chemical-free” does not automatically mean safer. Check the actual ingredients.

Manicure and Pedicure

You can continue enjoying manicures and pedicures during pregnancy. Choose a clean, hygienic salon and make sure the tools are properly sterilized.

If strong odors make you feel uncomfortable or nauseous, choose a well-ventilated space.

Head and Prenatal Massage

A gentle massage can help you relax during pregnancy. ACOG recommends side-lying as a suitable position for pregnancy massage and notes that prenatal massage from a therapist trained to work with pregnant women can be a good option.

Rather than assuming that every type of massage is safe, choose a prenatal massage and tell the therapist that you are pregnant.

What About Keratin Treatments and Laser Procedures?

This is where you should be more cautious.

Some hair-straightening treatments can involve chemicals and fumes, and cosmetic laser procedures are generally better discussed with your obstetrician or dermatologist before proceeding. Don’t assume that a treatment is safe simply because it is commonly offered at salons.

Pregnancy doesn’t mean putting your self-care on hold. It means being more selective about the products and treatments you choose.

Before trying a new beauty treatment, check the ingredients, choose a hygienic and well-ventilated setting, and speak with your obstetrician or dermatologist if you’re unsure.

Your comfort, your safety, and your baby’s well-being come first.
