Sleeping Positions During Pregnancy What’s Best

Many pregnant women worry that sleeping in the “wrong” position can harm the baby. In reality, there is no need to panic or strictly force one position all night.

Our bodies naturally adjust during sleep, and changing positions is normal and safe.

Sleeping on the Back

Sleeping on your back for short periods is generally not harmful, especially if you feel comfortable. However, in later pregnancy, some women may feel dizziness, breathlessness, or back discomfort in this position due to pressure on blood vessels.

If you notice discomfort, simply change your position — your body will guide you.

Sleeping on the Right Side

Sleeping on the right side is absolutely fine. Many women alternate between left and right sides during sleep, and this is completely normal.

Why Is Left-Side Sleeping Often Recommended?
  • Better blood flow to the uterus and placenta
  • Improved oxygen and nutrient supply to the baby
  • Reduced pressure on major blood vessels
  • Better comfort for many women as pregnancy advances

Think of left-side sleeping as a beneficial option, not a strict rule.

The Most Important Rule: Comfort Matters

The best sleeping position during pregnancy is one that feels comfortable and allows you to rest well. Good sleep supports hormonal balance, emotional well-being, and overall pregnancy health.

Using pillows for support and listening to your body is far more important than forcing a single position.

There is no single “perfect” sleeping position. While left-side sleeping has added benefits, other positions can also be considered based on comfort. Trust your body, rest well, and consult your gynecologist if you experience discomfort or sleep issues.
